The current version of AutoCAD is AutoCAD 2020 (AutoCAD 20), released in January 2019. The complete software package consists of the application (AutoCAD), AutoCAD LT, and LT Server. This article concentrates on the application (AutoCAD).

AutoCAD supports some of the basic 3D CAD functions, as well as 3D modeling, preparation of drawings, and BIM model-based visualization of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) components. It also offers basic 2D drafting capabilities, such as drawing, annotation, and measurement.

AutoCAD’s design interface and extensive feature set enable the user to create and edit a variety of 2D and 3D drawings. These include structural, piping, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, civil, architectural, and engineering plans, sections, and elevations, as well as 2D and 3D stereolithography (STL) models. For more information on AutoCAD LT, visit Autodesk LT.

Before AutoCAD was introduced, the only CAD application that could be run on a personal computer was the MCA PacCAD, which was designed by Masao Kawada and developed by the Mitsubishi Chemical Analytical Corp. Kawada approached Kodansha Ltd., the owner of the AutoCAD brand, about licensing AutoCAD and requested that the name be changed to MCA PacCAD. The first AutoCAD product was released on December 2, 1982. MCA PacCAD was a popular desktop app with a bitmap-based user interface and internal graphics controller, and was typically used by small design companies. The first AutoCAD products included versions for the Apple II, IBM PC, and Apple Macintosh.

AutoCAD LT was introduced in 1989 as a low-cost, low-power-usage version of AutoCAD. AutoCAD LT was intended to serve as a CAD option for the small business and design enterprise market. A desktop version was also released for the Macintosh, which provided a low-cost alternative to the MCA PacCAD product. AutoCAD LT was initially bundled with AutoCAD on a CD-ROM. The software continued to evolve, with versions for the Windows NT operating system, and separate Windows, Macintosh, and Linux versions of AutoCAD LT.

Version history

AutoCAD Free Download was originally developed on a modified version of Intergraph’s Architectural Desktop. It was developed by Intergraph from 1985 through 1997, and continued by that company into 2000, when they were acquired by Autodesk. At that time, Intergraph’s Intergraph Architecture Support Tools were spun off and became part of AutoCAD.

AutoCAD is a vector-graphics application that allows users to create, modify, and view two-dimensional, multi-page, drawing-based documents. The documents may contain text, lines, curves, arcs, text labels, fonts, dimensions, section planes, arcs, splines, polylines, and 2D solids. AutoCAD supports parametric and nonparametric 3D modeling. The user interface is based on a windows style and has a left-hand menu bar along the top of the screen, the right-hand side having a command-line, and the bottom having a large blank canvas in which the user’s work is displayed.

In AutoCAD 2006, the command line was moved to the bottom of the screen as the main workspace. In 2008, the command line had been replaced by a graphic workspace with a grid-like workspace surface. These features are more commonly found in AutoCAD 2010, although some earlier versions of AutoCAD had similar features. The screen is divided into a command-line, a blank canvas, and a workspace with the drawing in the middle. The command-line and the canvas are non-overlapping, and the workspace surface is not scrollable in any direction. The workspace surface can be enlarged by dragging with the mouse, or by using the mouse scroll wheel. The user has to click on the workspace surface to activate it. The workspace surface can be made transparent and can be used to insert objects. The toolbar on the right side of the workspace has the commands for the tools that can be used to edit the model and for the tools that are used to perform operations on the model such as the insertion, removal and modification of objects, moving the objects to a new location, deleting objects, and sending the model to the printer. There is a menu bar on the left side of the workspace. The menu bar has commands that are used to modify the model, change the zoom level of the display, and perform a number of other functions.

There are three types of tools available on the toolbar: selection tools, drawing tools,

What’s New In AutoCAD?

AutoCAD now supports marking up drawings on paper and PDF. Instead of working with separate drawing objects, you can mark up a paper or PDF drawing using the drawing’s Markup tab. Changes that you make to a drawing are applied to the paper or PDF file as you work.

AutoCAD 2023 also features the ability to use Markup Assist in a collaborative design session. Designers can send a sketch with feedback to other collaborators and receive that feedback by email.

Live Snap:

You can now use the Live Snap feature to instantly insert a duplicate of any part of your drawing into another drawing. (video: 1:24 min.)

In addition to other functionality, the Live Snap feature enables AutoCAD 2023 to make a smart selection of the best duplicate to use. This capability is based on an analysis of the drawing’s geometry. A previously existing drawing element is automatically selected as the best candidate, but you can also choose other candidate objects. When you move the cursor to the duplicate insertion point, the best candidate is automatically inserted, and you can then specify how to position it.

The initial release of AutoCAD 2023 offers two editions: Standard and Professional.
